What is Lecturette in SSB Interview?

The Lecturette is a Group Testing Officer (GTO) task conducted in Stage 3 of the SSB interview. It tests your ability to speak confidently and coherently on a given topic under time pressure. The test is common for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and all other SSB entries, as it assesses communication skills, general awareness, and presence of mind—all essential for an officer.

During the Lecturette, you are shown four topics written on cards. You choose one topic, get 3 minutes to prepare your thoughts, and then deliver a 3-minute speech in front of the group and the GTO. There is no option to change the topic once you have picked it, so choosing wisely matters.

The GTO evaluates your clarity of thought, structure of the speech (introduction, body, conclusion), confidence, body language, voice modulation, and knowledge of the topic. A well-delivered Lecturette demonstrates leadership potential—officers must often brief teams, address gatherings, and communicate effectively under pressure.

Topics can range from current affairs and social issues to defence, technology, and general knowledge. Staying updated with news and practicing impromptu speaking helps. The key is to speak clearly, maintain eye contact, and structure your thoughts even when the topic is unfamiliar.

Format

Four topics are displayed. You choose one, get 3 minutes to prepare, and deliver a 3-minute speech. No notes are allowed during delivery. The GTO and other candidates observe.

Conduct

The test is conducted in an open area with the GTO and fellow candidates. You pick a topic, use the 3-minute preparation time to organise your thoughts, and then deliver your speech standing. The GTO may note your performance for assessment.

Evaluation

The GTO evaluates clarity of thought, speech structure, confidence, body language, voice modulation, knowledge of the topic, and ability to stay within the time limit. Hesitation, repetition, or lack of structure can negatively impact the assessment.

Tips to Crack Lecturette in SSB

1

Choose a topic you are comfortable with. If all four seem difficult, pick the one where you can at least structure a basic argument.

2

Use the 3-minute preparation wisely. Jot down 3–4 key points: introduction, 2–3 main ideas, and a conclusion.

3

Start with a clear introduction—state the topic and your stance. End with a concise summary or call to action.

4

Speak at a steady pace. Rushing or pausing too long can hurt your score. Aim to fill the 3 minutes without rambling.

5

Maintain eye contact with the GTO and the group. Good body language—standing straight, minimal fidgeting—projects confidence.

6

Stay updated with current affairs, defence news, and social issues. Topics often draw from recent events.

7

Practice impromptu speaking regularly. Record yourself and review to identify fillers, repetition, or unclear sections.
